Diary of a TFC Century League Challenge 7
Before we start yesterday's thoughts, a quick review of the table. I've managed to maintain a 300+ point lead before today while the chasing pack are continuing to leap-frog each other. Here is an update on the top 5:
Week 17 Day 3
All bar two of the counties were in action yesterday so I was hoping that the points would start to flow a little quicker. And indeed they did flow. Nothing spectacular, but no ducks. Ali Brown finally put in a reasonable performance; it was just a shame that he ran out of partners. Compton, Ervine and New all scored a few and Trescothick even took a catch. Then came the evening Pro40 match. Or should I say farce!
For the second year running Kent hired in floodlights which couldn't be used properly because of high winds. At least the powers that be agreed to play a shortened match of 27 overs, but even that was optimistic and almost guaranteed a Duckworth Lewis calculation. In the end some spirited use of slow bowlers ensured more than the minimum 10 overs for the Surrey innings, but the victory for Kent still left a slightly sour taste in the mouth. If Kent can't provide permanent floodlights then they really must consider foregoing the Sky money and playing all their home matches in the afternoon. The final injustice (from a fantasy perspective) became apparent afterwards when it was announced that the 4-day match would start late on day 1 to compensate for the late finish to the one-day match. Late finish! It wasn't as though anyone had far to go with both matches taking place on the same ground. So, no team news before the deadline on Friday.
Bramernic Spitfires still managed to do quite well out of the farce with Schofield leading the Surrey batting and Tredwell taking a couple of wickets. It all added up to an OK day, made even better when the table was published this morning.
At last, a tiny slither of daylight is appearing between 1st and the chasing pack. It's nothing that a Murray Goodwin triple-century couldn't bridge, but it's welcome none-the-less. Let's just hope that this mornings decision to leave the armband with Danish was the right one.
